Kindle+ share by romance sub-genre: July vs October 2026

1 November 2026·4 min read·Hanna, for Romintel

Dark Romance is still the most Kindle+ heavy corner of romance at 71% of the top 50. Romantic Suspense, Paranormal and Historical all moved toward wide between July and October.

In October 2026, 71% of the Amazon top 50 in Dark Romance was enrolled in Kindle+ (the programme called Kindle Unlimited until Amazon renamed it on 22 October 2026). That makes Dark Romance the most Kindle+ dependent romance sub-genre we track. Romantasy (39%) and Historical Romance (38%) were the least. The bigger story is movement: three sub-genres shifted noticeably toward wide books between July and October.

What changed between July and October?

Romantic Suspense and Paranormal Romance each lost 13 points of Kindle+ share, and Historical lost 11. Autumn is when traditional publishers release heavily, and those books are almost never in Kindle+, so part of this is seasonal. Contemporary Romance went the other way and gained 9 points, which means indie Kindle+ books took more of that chart.

Prices barely moved. Kindle+ books in every sub-genre sat at a median of $4.99 or $5.99, so the Kindle+ side of romance is priced as one market.

Why does the window stop on 21 October?

Amazon changed the Kindle Unlimited badge to Kindle+ on 22 October, and tools that read the old badge, ours included, briefly stopped recognising Kindle+ books. We have updated how we detect it and now capture the large majority, though a few can still slip through, which would make post-rebrand shares read slightly low. So this comparison stops at 21 October. We will add November once the new readings have a few clean weeks behind them.

What should an author do with this?

If you write Dark Romance, Kindle+ is still the default and going wide means competing with books readers already get through their subscription. If you write Romantic Suspense, Paranormal or Historical, the wide audience in the top 50 is now large enough that wide is a real option, especially for a series. Use the share as context for the decision, not as the decision.
